January
  • World Buskers Festival - the largest international street performers' festival in Australasia.
  • The Methven Summer School 5 days of high quality, educational, informative and fun courses, based at Mt Hutt College, Methven (9 - 13 January 2006).
February
  • Christchurch Festival of Flowers - an international floral celebration in the garden city. Includes the Christchurch Cathedral floral carpet, prize-winning garden tours, Botanic Gardens big day, and the flower fairies' magical garden.
  • Food and Wine Festival of Canterbury - Canterbury's premier display of selected wines and food in Hagley Park.
  • Speights Coast to Coast multi-sports event - involves 238 km/148 miles of kayaking, mountain running and cycling from the West Coast to Christchurch on the East Coast.
March
  • Le Race - the South Island's largest cycling event starts in Cathedral Square and finishes in Akaroa. A great course with spectacular views.
April
  • Akaroa Frenchfest - a celebration of Akaroa's French history and heritage - includes films, music, local food, wine and family entertainment.
  • The New Zealand Walking and Adventure Festival is held around the Canterbury region on the 1st and 2nd April 2006, it includes guided walks and a number of adventure activities such as Jet Boat rides, horse riding, and rafting
August
  • Christchurch International Jazz Festival - a feast of jazz, wine and food featuring top international, national and local talent.

October
  • Kaikoura Seafest - savour sea fare on the first Saturday in October.
November
  • Showtime Canterbury - Christchurch's annual carnival full of activities including an agricultural and pastoral show, harness racing, gallops, and fashion.
  • "Christchurch on the Rhine - Cologne upon Avon" - unique public carnival function to be held in the Caledonian Hall, 135 Kilmore Street, Christchurch, on Saturday, 11th November 2006.
