Milford Track Fiordland  - New Zealand best hike

The Milford Track is New Zealand's most famous hiking track. It is 53 km 4day / 3 night hike which starts at the head of Lake Te Anau and finishes at Milford Sound. The best time to walk the Milford track is between late October and April. The popularity of Milford Track at this time means that bookings are required (a maximum of 40 people can start the track each day). Bookings open July 1 each year for the coming season.

Due to harsh conditions in the winter the Milford Track only experienced, well equiped parties should attempt to walk the track. During the off peak season (May-October), it not necessary to book.

There are numerous guided options for walkers on the Milford Track. It is also possible to do the track as an independent walker. Independent walkers need to carry all there own food and equipment, and to arrange transport to and from the Milford Track. In the summer there are regular transport services to and from the Milford Track. However, due to demand it is recommended to book at least one week in advance.

Te Anau is the closest town to the Milford Track. Te Anau has a full range of accommodation, transport and tourist services.
