Hanmer Springs is 1 and a half hours drive (136km) from Christchurch,
and 3 and a half hours drive from Nelson. Kaikoura is 1 and a half hours
drive along along the scenic State Highway 70, which forms one leg of
the Alpine Pacific Triangle (Waipara - Hanmer Springs - Kaikoura - Waipara)
which passes takes you to the Waipara
wine region, the thermal hot pools of Hanmer Springs, and
whale watching off Kaikoura.
